FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties' Late Comeback Falls Short in 70-58 Loss to Lincoln
MANSFIELD – Mansfield cut a 23-point deficit down to just seven points over a seven minute span late in the second half, but Lincoln staved off the Mounties' comeback attempt to claim a 70-58 non-conference victory Sunday night at Decker Gymnasium.
Freshman
Becky Evans scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Mansfield (1-10, 0-7 PSAC) offensively. Evans went 7-of-14 from the floor including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc to register a career high in scoring. She also had a game-high five steals and four assists.
Brielle Kelly recorded 13 points and six rebounds while
Tianna Jackson added 12 points.
Katie Fitzpatrick scored 10 points and pulled down six boards.
Amani Clark and Lisa Saunders had a team-best 11 points each for Lincoln (7-2, 0-0 CIAA). Courtney Lucas had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Smith and Zephrah Pam also chipped in 10 points for the Lions.
Mansfield carried a 5-3 advantage two-and-a-half minutes into the game, but Lincoln regained the lead on a Smith 3-pointer. Lincoln led 8-7 at the 14:32 mark before using a 14-run over the next seven minutes to jump out to a 22-7 advantage. The Mountaineers went into halftime trailing 38-25.
In the second half, Lincoln built its lead up to 20 points just three minutes into the half before leading by 23 points, its biggest lead of the game, at the 10:01 mark. The Lions led 59-36 with 8:39 to play in the game, but the Mountaineers went on a 26-4 run over the next seven minutes to close within seven.
The Mounties were unable to pull any closer as Lincoln escaped with the non-conference victory.
Both teams were plagued by turnovers as Lincoln totaled 27 and Mansfield 26. Lincoln held a slight 40-34 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Mansfield was held to just 33.9% (20-59) shooting from the field including 15.0% (3-20) from 3-point.
The Mountaineers continue their four-game home stand after the holiday break by hosting Slippery Rock and Edinboro on Jan. 3 and 4.
