FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Mounties Hold Off Seton Hill to Snap 10-Game Losing-Skid
MANSFIELD –
Mallory Christman and
Claire Swink scored the first goals of their collegiate careers to lead Mansfield to a dramatic 2-1 win over Seton Hill in a PSAC contest Wednesday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.
The win was the Mountaineer's second of the season over Seton Hill and snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to a 2-1 win over Kutztown on Sept. 20.
Mansfield got on the board early when Christman's shot, off an assist from
Courtney Wilson, found the back of the net a little less than seven minutes into the contest.
The Mountaineers added another first half score 20 minutes later when Swink scored on a penalty corner off an assist by
Jessi Swingle.
Mansfield took the 2-0 lead into halftime and both teams battled through a scoreless second half until Seton Hill got a goal from Brittany Davis off a loose ball from 5-yards out with just under eight minutes to play.
The final five minutes were fast and furious, starting with shot on goal by Mansfield's
Chelsea Tanco that was stopped by Griffin goalie Jane Eberhardt.
Mansfield called out time out with just over three minutes to play and Seton Hill put a shot on goal with a corner. Kayla Chapman's shot with 33 seconds remaining kicked up over the shoulder of the goalie but Mansfield freshman defender
Emily Blidy preserved the win with a great defensive save. Seton Hill got another shot off seven seconds later that was blocked by a Mountaineer defender.
Mansfield pressured the net most of the afternoon putting 18 shots on goal to Seton Hill's 11. The Mountaineers also held a substantial 12-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Lawson, the nation's saves leader, stopped 15 of 16 shots she faced.
Mansfield improves to 3-14 overall and 3-12 in PSAC play while Seton Hill falls to 0-15 and 0-13 in conference play.
Mansfield will wrap up the 2014 season when they host nationally-ranked Limestone on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Seniors
