Last Seconds Penalty Stroke Sinks Mounties

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Slippery Rock Pulls out 2-1 Last Seconds Win over Mansfield in PSAC Field Hockey

SLIPPERY ROCK – For more than 60 minutes, Mansfield clung on to a 1-0 lead on the strength of Jessi Swingle's first half goal but Slippery Rock scored twice in the final eight minutes, including the game-winner with 35 seconds remaining on a penalty stroke, to pull out a 2-1 in a PSAC field hockey contest Saturday afternoon.

Mansfield scored early when Swingle recorded her team-best fourth goal of the season off a corner assist from Claire Swink less than nine minutes into the game.

It was the only shot the Mountaineers would record on the afternoon.

The Mountaineer defense and goalie Laura Lawson held on to that 1-0 lead warding off 14 shots on goal in a remarkable performance before SRU's Michelle Couch tied the game with a goal in the 61st minute.

In a wild finish, Slippery Rock was awarded a penalty corner with less than a minute to play in regulation and got off a shot that hit off the post.

Six seconds later, SRU was awarded a penalty stroke with 35 second remaining with Kelsey Gustafson placing the ball out of the reach of Lawson to pull off the comeback win.

Lawson, the NCAA's saves leader, recorded 15 saves on the day and now has 126 saves on the season.

Mansfield was outshot 23-1 with Slippery Rock also holding a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners.

The Mountaineers host East Stroudsburg on Tuesday.
