FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Penn Rallies Past Mansfield in Second Half
PHILADELPHIA – Penn scored on its first two plays of the second half to erase a 14-7 halftime deficit on its way to a 42-14 come-from-behind win over visiting Mansfield in a CSFL contest at historic Franklin Field Friday night.
It was truly a tale of two halves after Mansfield played a near flawless first half while Penn was almost perfect in the second half.
Junior
Jeremy Estremera scored on runs of three and five yards to give Mansfield a 14-7 halftime lead with the Mountaineers holding a 152-85 advantage in total offense over the first two quarters.
Estremera scored the game's first touchdown with 44 seconds left in the first quarter capping off a 16-play 91-yard drive. Estremera ran to his right and then reversed his field cutting back and sneaking the ball past the left endzone for the touchdown and a 14-7 advantage at the end of the first half.
Penn tied game at 7-7 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keith Braccia to Jack Epstein midway through the second.
Mansfield came right back, aided by a double personal foul penalty against Penn, with an eight-play, 69-yard drive with Estremera scoring on a five-yard run.
Quarterback
Ben Pepper completed 5-of-8 passes for 64 yards in the first half.
Penn came out of halftime on fire, stopping Mansfield on three plays and forcing a punt.
Penn switched out quarterbacks with Mike McCurty replacing Braccia. On Penn's first play of the second half, McCurty hit a streaking Michael Bass who got behind the secondary for a 47-yard touchdown tying the score at 14-14.
Penn intercepted a Pepper pass on the Mountaineer's ensuring possession with McCurty hooking up with Bass on another first play, 43-yard scoring pass for a 21-14 advantage.
A two-yard plunge by Mike Beamish late in the third quarter increased Penn's lead to 28-14. McCurty then found Bass again for a 37-yard TD before hitting Jack Epstein for a 19-yard touchdown.
Penn completed 12-of-13 passes in the second half for 234 yards and four touchdowns. The Quakers would outgain Mansfield 317-81 in the second half.
Estremera led the Mountaineer offense rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Pepper completed 9-of-16 passes for 82 yards with
Joe Bucek catching three passes for 33-yards.
Mansfield falls to 1-1 and travels to Navy this Friday night.
