Mansfield Closes Out Regular Season with 90-65 Win Over Kutztown -- Host Bloomsburg in Opening Round Saturday
MANSFIELD –
Joe Bell recorded his seventh double-double of the season to lead Mansfield to 90-65 win over Kutztown Wednesday at Decker Gymnasium.
The win, coupled with a Bloomsburg loss to East Stroudsburg, clinched the fourth-seed in the PSAC East earning the Mountaineers a home first-round playoff game Saturday evening in Decker Gymnasium. Mansfield will host Bloomsburg in that opening round game after the Huskies dropped a 102-44 decision at East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg lost to Millersville 83-69.
“We did what we had to do,” said head coach
Rich Miller. “We got up early, keep the lead and won the game to earn a home playoff game.”
Mansfield never trailed, scoring the first seven points of the game before expanding the lead to 18-5 on a jumper by
Kevonte McClain six minutes into the contest.
The Mountaineer held a 40-29 at halftime and led 56-37 on a layup by Bell six minutes into the second half. Mansfield took its biggest lead of the night on a
Brady Burke layup putting the Mountaineers up 90-63 with ninety seconds remaining.
Mansfield held a 43-38 rebounding advantage and only turned the ball over nine times while holding Kutztown to just 65 points after the Golden Bears scored a season-high 94 points against the Mountaineers in their first meeting.
The win was the third straight for the Mountaineers and puts Mansfield back into the PSAC playoffs after having a three-year playoff run halted last season.
Bell scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers offensively.
Chuck Harper scored 12 points while
Kevonte McClain added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Brady Burke scored a season-high 10 points. Freshman
Kamil Parzych just missed his first collegiate double-double dishing out 12 assists and scoring nine points.
Micah Fraction scored a game-high 28 points to lead Kutztown.
