Mountie men drop 86-70 decision at Mercyhurst
ERIE –
Charles Becoats scored a career-high 22 points and
Chuck Harper added 21 points but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield dropped a 86-70 decision at Mercyhurst in a PSAC crossover contest Friday night.
Becoats 3-point shooting keep Mansfield in the game for much of the first half with the Mountaineers trailing just 32-30 after
Joe Bell hit a pair of free throws with just under five minutes remaining before halftime.
Mercyhurst (8-4, 4-2 PSAC) would use its inside game to close out the half on a 15-7 run to take a 47-35 lead into the locker room.
Mansfield cut the gap to 49-39 on a jumper by freshman
Taijay Williams early in the second half but could pull no closer in falling to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in PSAC play.
Becoats hit a career-best six 3-pointers in the game while Harper scored 16 of his season-high 21 points in the second half.
Onyema Utti added 10 points for Mansfield.
Joe Bell, the PSAC East Player of the Week, scored a season-low five points and went 0-8 from the floor. It marked the first time in his 35-game collegiate career that Bell has not hit at least one field goal in a game while also snapping a 26-game streak of scoring in double figures.
Senior Luis Leao scored a game-high 25 points for Mercyhurst with Jonathan Ouegnin recording a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists.
The Mountaineers travel across town to Gannon for a Saturday night game.
