Slow starting Mountie men fall at No. 16 IUP
INDIANA, PA – Mathis Keita topped four players in double-figures with a game-high 18 points to lead No. 16 IUP to a 79-50 win over visiting Mansfield in a PSAC crossover game Wednesday night.
Mansfield (2-5, 1-4 PSAC) could do little right offensively shooting less than 30% from the floor over the first 30 minutes of the game. The Mountaineers missed their first 10 3-point attempts, connecting on just 3-of-16 in the game.
Mansfield led early and the two teams were tied at 7-7 a little more than five minutes into the game before IUP used a 22-4 run to take what proved to be an insurmountable 29-11 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half.
IUP (8-1, 4-1 PSAC) forced 18 Mansfield turnovers while losing the ball just five times.
Joe Bell was one of the few bright spots for the Mountaineers, scoring 16 points and pulling down eight rebounds. He also blocked three shots. It marked the 25th straight-game the sophomore forward has scored in double-figures dating back to last season. Senior
Chuck Harper had nine points and seven rebounds.
Scooter Renkin added 15 points for IUP with Anthony Wells and Blake Vedder scoring 10 points each.
The 50 points were the fewest scored by a Mountaineer team since dropping a 72-49 decision at Gannon in the third game of the 1993-94 season. Mansfield beat Gannon at Decker Gymnasium later that year.
Mansfield will travel to Florida for the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament on Dec. 28-29.
