Bell's double-double tops four Mountaineers in double figures in 87-74 exhibition win over Gwynedd-Mercy
MANSFIELD –
Joe Bell scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down a game-best 14 rebounds to lead Mansfield to a 87-74 win over Gwyneed-Mercy in an exhibition game Monday evening in Decker Gymnasium.
Bell, who scored 16 points in the second half, sparked a Mountaineer rally that broke open what was up to then a tight game. With Mansfield holding a 59-57 lead with just over 10 minutes to play, Bell hit nine straight points over a three minute span giving Mansfield a 68-57 advantage with 7:54 to play.
Gwyneed-Mercy jumped out to a 15-6 lead over the first four minutes of the game and increased its advantage to 30-18 with eight minutes remaining in the first half Mansfield used a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 32-31 on a 3-pointer by
Onyema Utti at the 4:29 mark.
Mansfield shot 53.1% from the floor in the second half while holding Gwyneed-Mercy to 40.7%.
Utti also recorded his second double-double in 48 hours with 17 points, 12 of which came in the first half, and 10 rebounds. Senior
Chuck Harper added 12 points and red-shirt freshman
Brad Williams 11 points.
Justin Knight paced Gwynedd-Mercy with 21 points with Frank Champion adding 19 points and nine rebounds.
Mansfield opens the regular season at Roberts Wesleyan on Nov. 13.
