FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jess Scordino earns NCAA advances to NCAA National Championship with 6th place finish at NCAA Atlantic Regional – Sister Kristy earns All-Region honors

LOCK HAVEN – Jess Scordino finished 6th overall to advance to the NCAA National Championship while her sister Kristy Scordino also earned All-Region honors to help the Mansfield University women's team to a 10th place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship held at Lock Haven Saturday.

“What a great day for Mansfield University and the women's cross country program,” said an excited head coach Mike Rohl. “Jess and Kristy both ran excellent races and deserve all the recognition in the world, but the whole team really pushed themselves. It's rewarding to all of us to be a top 10 regional team with two All-Region runners and someone going to the national championship.”

Jess Scordino's performance is even more remarkable considering she hadn't competed in a race since Sept. 22 because of injuries.

In 12th place after the first mile, Scordino steadily moved her way up the pack until the final mile when she moved into 6th place and held off East Stroudsburg's Corinne Fitzgerald. Jess covered the 6k course in 21:23.5 bettering Fitzgerald by almost five seconds while finishing two seconds behind Sarah Krolick of Edinboro in 5th place.

Jess Scordino was 18th at last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional and finished 36th overall as a freshman in 2010.

She becomes the third Mountaineer women's runner in school history, along with Charity Learn and Brenae Edwards, to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship meet which this year will be held in Joplin, MO on Nov. 17.

Katie Spratford of Shippensburg finished first with a time of 20:20.0.

Kristy Scordino ran with her sister until late in the race but her 14th place finish of in the field of 171 runners earned 21:39.8 her All-Region honors.

Junior Savannah Boucher was the Mountaineer third highest finisher crossing the line in 55th place (22:49.8) followed by senior Kait Chegwidden (90th – 23:48.1) and junior Amy Lee (119th – 24:29.4).

Senior Kristen Von Beveren was 106th at 25:15.9 and sophomore Rachel Tylock 157th (26:56.6).

Mansfield (281) finished 10th overall in the 24 team event. Shippensburg won the team championship with 70 points.

An injury-depleted men's team could not field a full squad. Sophomore Jesse Jones was the Mountaineers top finisher coming in 49th overall with a time of 32:55.4 over the 8k course. Sophomore Will Mullen was 66th at 33:39.0 while sophomore Eric Scherer and  junior Jake Portock were 119th and 121st respectively.
