Navy uses ground game to run past Mansfield in weather-marred CSFL game Friday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy scored three touchdowns over a five-minute span in the second quarter to break open a tight 14-7 game on their way to a 48-7 win at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium Friday night.
The early part of the game was marred by Mansfield miscues and torrential weather that caused a 34-minute lighting delay with Navy holding a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
After the teams came back on the field, Navy used a 38-yard punt return to set up a 1
st and goal from the Mansfield 1-yard line and scored two plays later on a 4-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Chumich from Len Correale with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter for a 14-0 Navy lead.
But Mansfield came back, largely on the strength of a 65-yard kickoff return by sophomore
Jeremy Estremera, to give Mansfield a 1
st and 10 from the Navy 29 yard line. A personal foul call gave Mansfield the ball on the Navy 14 and two plays later freshman
Ben Pepper hit fellow freshman
Casey Huff on a slant for a 17-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 14-7.
Mansfield held Navy to back-to-back three and outs on the next two series before the skies opened with a monsoon rain with the Midshipmen taking advantage of an interception and two strong punt returns to take a 34-7 halftime advantage.
Navy only had 137 yards in total offense in the first half, 118 of them on the ground, with none of its first half scoring drives taking more than four plays. Mansfield, which turned the ball over three times on interceptions in the first 30 minutes, was held to 33 yards in the first half by the CSFL's top defense.
Mansfield couldn't establish any offensive flow in the third quarter as Navy scored two more touchdowns to increase its lead to 48-7.
Navy had 321 yards in total offense with 239 of those yards coming on the ground. Alex Horton rushed for 120 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries.
Mansfield was held to just 35 yards in total offense in the game with Pepper completing 6-of-19 passes for 35 yards including a 17-yard touchdown to
Casey Huff. Huff also had one rush for 22 yards.
Troy Taylor led the defense with 13 tackles with
Mike Wang recording nine stops.
Mansfield falls to 1-4 on the season while Navy improves to 5-0.
Mansfield hosts Franklin Pierce next Saturday at Karl Van Norman Field.
