BOX SCORE

SHIPPENSBURG
– Five different Mansfield players recorded goals to give the Mountaineers a 5-2 victory over Southern Connecticut State in their season opener hosted at Shippensburg University.

In the first game of her collegiate career, freshman Kayla Grunza put the Mounties up 1-0 with an unassisted goal in the 24 minute. Soon after, senior Danielle Hackenberg found the back of the cage when she placed an Alycia Pici pass into goal to make it a 2-0 game.

Southern Connecticut State cut the lead to 2-1 just before half on a Laurie Cockerline score.

Mansfield came out of halftime on the offensive with three straight goals scored by Kristyn Grunza in the 45th, Taryn Schawillie in the 54th and Kristy Tutorow in the 59th to take a 5-1 advantage over the Owls.

Paige Donlin's goal in the final minutes of the game to make the score 5-2, but the Mountaineer's lead was too much for Southern Connecticut to overcome and Mansfield walked away with the victory.

Junior Jamie Twist made three saves in her 70:00 minutes in goal while only allowing two goals.

The Mountaineer offense continued to be a dominant force, putting 15 shots on goal with Schawillie accounting for six shots on goal herself.

Mansfield improves to 1-0 on the season while the Owls fall to 0-1. The Mountaineers are back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. when they face St. Michael's College in a neutral site contest at Shippensburg University.
