MANSFIELD –
Josh Harrison ran for 89 of Mansfield's 322-rushing yards and also scored two touchdowns while junior
Troy Taylor led the defense with a school-record three interceptions to lead the Mountaineers to a 40-2 win over Princeton in a CSFL game contest Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.
“It certainly felt good to win, especially after last week's disappointing loss,” said head coach Dan Davis. “We weren't as sharp at times as we would have liked to be but we were able to establish the running game and stuck with it.”
Last week, Mansfield led Cornell midway through the fourth quarter before giving up 17 points in the final eight minutes – all of them coming off turnovers.
Mansfield used 11 different rushers to pound out 322-yards on 59 carries on a muddy Van Norman Field. In addition to Harrison's 89 yards, Choa Porch picked up 65-yards on eight carries including a 24-yard touchdown scamper.
Freshman quarterback
Mike Maniscalco passed on seven times but completed five of them for 58-yards as Mansfield also set a school sprint football record with 390 yards in total offense.
The Mountaineers took a 6-0 led when Maniscalco capped off a nine-play 86-yard drive with a 1-yard
plunge midway through the first quarter. Less than two minutes later, Mansfield increased the lead to 13-0 when Harrison scored his first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard run.
Mansfield took a 19-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when freshman
Chao Porch scored on a 24-yard run but the extra point attempts was blocked and returned for a two-point defensive conversion by Princeton's John Moffat.
After leading 19-2 at halftime, Mansfield increased the lead to 27-2 with Harrision scoring from 5-yards out three minutes into the third quarter. With less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter, freshman
Sean Green caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Maniscalco giving the Mountaineers a 34-2 lead.
Mansfield played its reserves the fourth quarter and scored the game's final touchdown when backup quarterback
Brandon Ammon scored on a 16-yard scamper with nine minutes to play.
Mansfield set 11 sprint football records in the game including total offense, rushing yards, rushing attempts (59), rushing touchdowns (5) and yards per rush (5.5). The 40 points were the most scored by a Mansfield team since establishing the sprint program in 2008.
The Mountaineer defense held Princeton to 109-yards in total offense including 57 yards rushing. Taylor had three interceptions of Princeton's Jais Zachariah with
Brandon Couse also picking off a pass.
“The defensive line gets a lot of credit for those interceptions,” said Taylor. “They put pressure on the quarterback all day forcing him to hurry his throws and I was just lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right times.”
Senior defensive linemen
Paul Houseknecht and linebacker
Jake Myers each had nine tackles with Housknecht also recording a sack.
Cody Croasdale was credited with eight tackles, including three for a loss, as well as a sack. Fellow defensive lineman
Justin DiMatteo had seven tackles and a sack.
Running back Kevin Infante topped the Princeton offense rushing for 64-yards on 29 carries while Kees Thompson had three catches for 42 yards. Linebacker John Moffa had a monster day with 21 tackles including three for a loss.
Mansfield improves to 1-1 and travels face Army (1-0) at West Point on Friday night.
