MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University field hockey team scored five goals in the second half to roll past Seton Hill 5-2 in a PSAC West match-up Wednesday. Junior
Kristyn Grunza led the Mountaineers in scoring with two goals in the game.
It was all defense in the first half, with goalies from both teams keeping the game in a scoreless tie. Mansfield keeper
Jamie Twist displayed solid defensive play, recording seven saves in the half to keep Seton Hill off the scoreboard.
Senior
Jessie Wolski prevented a Griffin score in the 11th minute recoding a defensive save for the Mountaineers.
In the second half, Mansfield's
Taryn Schawillie got the scoring party started in the 39th minute placing an
Emily Heinaman pass into goal from 10 yards out to break the scoreless tie. Just a minute later,
Kristyn Grunza gave Mansfield a 2-0 lead taking a
Talena Truitt corner pass and striking it past the goalie from 14 yards out.
Seton Hill answered back in the 44th minute when Janelle Hofer scored an unassisted goal to cut the Mountie lead.
Not more than a minute later, Grunza scored her second goal of the game when she backhanded a
Kristy Tutorow pass to put the Mounties up by two scores.
Mansfield's offense continued to dominate the game adding two more goals, one from
Kayla Grunza in the 54th minute and Tutorow in the 66th to take a 5-1 advantage over the Griffins.
In the waning minutes of the game, Heather Apodaca scored Seton Hill's second goal of the game, but Mansfield's lead was too great for the visiting team to overcome and the Mountaineers came away with a 5-2 victory.
Twist was a key factor in the win, recoding 11 saves in the game and earning her third win of the season.
With the win, Mansfield improves to 3-3 on the season and is 1-1 in the PSAC West.
The Mountaineers are back in action Sept. 24 when they travel to Shippensburg University for a PSAC West match-up. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
