LOCK HAVEN – IUP scored three goals in the first eight minutes of the game and then held on to edge Mansfield 3-2 in a PSAC West field hockey contest played Tuesday evening in Lock Haven.
Both teams came into the game undefeated with Mansfield winning its first two outings of the season and IUP, ranked No. 5 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll released earlier today, at 3-0.
The game got off to an incredibly fast paced start with all five goals scored during the first 14 minutes of play before morphing into an intense defense struggle.
IUP drew first blood when Jullian Duld scored off a rebounded ball off Mansfield goalie
Jamie Twist 4:36 into the game. The Crimson Hawks increased the lead to 2-0 just over a minute later when Danielle Edwards scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Duld.
Two minutes later Mansfield got on the board when junior
Kristy Tutorow got behind the defense and tip the ball past the IUP goalie.
But IUP countered 24 seconds later when Anouk Sickman scored to increase the lead to 3-1.
Mansfield closed the gap to 3-1 13:44 into the game when
Kristyn Grunza took a rebounded ball off the pads of IUP goalie Brittany Varacallo and passed it to
Taryn Schawillie who scored her third goal of the season.
After the torrid first 14 minutes of the game, neither team would manage another goal with IUP getting off
five more shots before halftime to Mansfield's two shots.
The second half was a fierce competition between defenses on both teams.
Mansfield managed two penalty corners in the game's final minute but couldn't get off the potential game tying goal.
Mansfield's
Kristie Rollman recorded six saves without allowing a goal over the final 57 minutes after entering the game for Twist. IUP goalies Brittany Varacallo and Sarah Lermieux combined for five saves.
The Mountaineers host No. 10 East Stroudsburg on Friday.
