MANSFIELD – With less than six minutes to play, Mansfield was on the cusp of one of the greatest upsets in CSFL history holding a 19-17 lead over undefeated Navy.
But the Midshipmen, who rallied for 20 fourth quarter points, scored a 3-yard touchdown run by Marty Meehan with 5:20 to go to take a 23-19 lead and Samuel Gedeon intercepted a
Mike Maniscalco pass and returned it for a 40-yard touchdown to rally Navy to a 30-19 CSFL win over Mansfield before more than 3,400 sun-drenched Homecoming fans.
“Mansfield played a heck of a ball game,” said Navy head coach Major Mitch Maury. “They gave us all we could handle and they have lot to be proud about.”
After a scoreless first quarter, the Midshipmen got on the scoreboard first when Navy's Will Parker scooped up a Mansfield fumble and returned it seven-yards for a touchdown two minutes into the second quarter.
Mansfield tied the score at 7-7 eight minutes later when
Pat Mackewicz capped off a 7-play, 76-yard drive with a 32-yard touchdown catch from freshman quarterback
Mike Maniscalco.
Mansfield mounted another long drive, this one a 64-yarder on six plays with Mackewicz catching another touchdown pass from Maniscalco, this one for 21-yards and a 13-7 lead after the extra-point attempt failed.
The Mountaineers increased the lead to 19-7 two minutes into the second half when
Sean Green caught a 30-yard TD pass from Maniscalco after
Glen Jenkins recovered a Navy fumble on a sack by
Cody Croasdale.
Navy cut the score to 19-10, and started a run of 23-unanswered points, when Adri Montecinos booted a 39-yard field goals with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
An 18-yard pass from quarterback Lewis Correale to David Williams pulled the Midshipmen to 19-17 with 11:32 to play.
Even after Mansfield gave up two touchdowns in less than a minute, the Mountaineers still had a chance when running back David Williams fumbled at the Navy 45 with just over two minutes to play. But teammate D.J. Hooper recovered the fumble on a bounce and returned it to the Mansfield 37 to effectively seal the win.
“We outplayed them in virtually every aspect of the game,” said Mansfield University head coach Dan Davis. “They know we did and we know we did but you can't give a team as good as Navy two touchdowns on turnovers and get a win. Take away those two turnovers that went for touchdowns and we win that game.”
It was a stunning turnaround for Mansfield which suffered a 56-7 loss at Army last week. Navy, which has lost just four games in the past 10 years, beat Army 38-20 in the season opener and had shut out its last two opponents by a combined score of 93-0.
Mansfield picked up 244-yards in total offense while holding Navy to a season-low 302-yards.
Freshman quarterback Mike Mancalsco set a school-record with three touchdown passes and completed 16-of-26 for 206 yards with one interception. Freshman
Sean Green had six catches for 96-yards and a touchdown while
Pat Mackewicz had three catches for 54-yards and two scores.
The Mansfield defense had an outstanding afternoon led by
Jake Myers who recorded a game-high 18 tackles and Michael Wang with 12 tackles. Senior defensive end
Glen Jenkins was credited with 10 stops.
David Williams, the CSFL's leading rusher, ran for 147-yards on 28 carries for Navy and also had two catches for 22 yards. Quarterback Lewis Correale completed 11-of-25 passes for 121 yards.
Mansfield falls to 1-3 and travels to historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia to play Penn on Friday.
