LOCK HAVEN –
Taryn Schawillie scored her 11th goal of the season and
Liz Phillippy recorded a career-best 13 saves in goal but it would be enough as No. 2-ranked Shippensburg edged Mansfield 2-1 in a PSAC West field hockey contest Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven.
Mansfield (4-11, 2-7 PSAC West) gave one of its most inspired efforts of the season on Senior Day with
Danielle Hackenberg,
Liz Phillippy, Jamie Purdy,
Jillian Richards and
Jessie Wolski being honored in pregame ceremonies.
Shippensburg (14-2, 8-0 PSAC West) scored the game's first goal when Bre White scored on a breakaway in the 27th minute.
The goal was the only scored in the first half by either team.
Mansfield tied the game just over three minutes into the second half with Schawillie took a long pass from Richard who redirected the ball past Shippensburg goalie Carenna Neely.
Five minutes later, Shippensburg sophomore Lauren Taylor redirected a tipped ball off a Mansfield defender into the goal for what would prove to be the winning goal.
Mansfield had one final chance of tying the score late in the game on one of the Mountaineers three penalty corners of the afternoon, but couldn't get a shot off.
Phillippy turned in an impressive performance in goal in her first start of the season stopping back-to-back shots over a four second span before the winning goal was tipped over her head.
Shippensburg held a 27-4 shot advantage and 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Mansfield hosts Kutztown Monday at Lock Haven.
