MILLERSVILLE –
Derrison Anthony scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half and Mansfield had four players score in double-figures in a 75-55 win over Millersville in a PSAC East contest Saturday afternoon in Pucillo Gymnasium.
“I thought we played a lot smarter defensively in the second,” said head coach
Rich Miller. “We did some things defensively that forced them to have to make plays to beat us instead of making mistakes and beating ourselves.”
After starting the game making just one of their first six shots, the Mountianeers caught fire connecting on 9 of their next 11 attempts from the floor to 21-8 lead on a jumper by
Yuseff Carr 11 minutes into the game.
Millersville countered with a long distance hot-streak of its own, hitting four straight 3-pointers to close the gap to 28-22 with four minutes remaining before halftime and trailed by just two points at 34-32 at the end of the first half.
Mansfield came out of the locker room and went on a 15-5 run, taking a 49-37 lead on a Anthony jumper five minutes into the second half and held a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game.
Mansfield held a 42-30 rebounding advantage and shot 53.4% (31-58) from the floor. The Mountaineer held Millersville to its second-lowest scoring total on the season. The Marauders shot just 22.3% in the second half including 1-10 on 3-point attempts.
Anthony, who hit 5-of-7 shots in the second half, also dished out a game-high five assists and pulled down seven rebounds.
Yuseff Carr, who missed Mansfield's last game because of flu-like symptoms, scored a game-high 16 points despite playing just 20 minutes.
Kurtis Levere come off the bench to score 11 poits with
Josh Dupuy adding 10 points.
Jaymes Miller came off the bench to lead Millersville (5-8, 0-2 PSAC East) with 15 points.
The win snaps a season-long two game skid for the Mountaineers who improve to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in PSAC East play.
Mansfield will host East Stroudsburg, which improved to 2-0 in conference play with a win at West Chester on Saturday, this Wednesday evening in Decker Gymnasium. The team schools tied for the PSAC East title last season.
