MANSFIELD – Mansfield freshman
Michael Wallace rushed for a school record 144-yards, 90 of them coming on a game-opening 90-yard touchdown run, as the Mountaineers threw a scare into CSFL leader Penn in a 27-14 loss in front of more than 2,600 Homecoming fans Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.
Wallace, who had a then school-record 57-yard touchdown run in a win over Princeton last week, broke through the line on the opening handoff and outraced the Penn defenders down the right sideline for a 90-yard score 24 seconds into the game.
Wallace broke Desmond Johnson's single game rushing record of 128 yard set last year at Princeton, and has posted back-to-back 100 yard games after running for 114-yards at Princeton.
Ryan Lose hit the extra-point to give Mansfield a 7-0 lead before Penn answered right back with sophomore Whitman Shaw returning the ensuing kickoff 62-yards to the Mansfield 18-yard line. Two plays later Freddy Ordonez hauled in 15-yard pass from quarterback Todd Busler to tie the score at 7-7 with just over a minute into the game.
Penn used another short field later in the first quarter capping a 10-play, 37-yard drive on a one-yard plunge by Busler. Penn got their third touchdown of the first-quarter five minutes later on a 11-yard touchdown pass from Busler to Shaw for a 21-7 lead at the end of the first half.
The Mansfield defense tightened, allowing Penn just two field goals of 35 and 25-yards by Raiam Dos Santos. The Mansfield offense also picked up behind sophomore quarterbacks
Spencer La Mountain and
Kode Plank. La Mountain moved the team on the ground grounding out 20 yards in the first half and Plank completed 15-of-27 passes for 149 yards in the second half.
One of those completions was for 15-yards for a touchdown to senior
Ben Anderton in the fourth quarter.
Kevin Valentine caught six passes for 58-yards while Nick Sheaffer had four catches for 51 yards.
Anderton recorded three catches for 42-yards.
Mansfield held a 330-278 advantage in total offense using an almost perfect balance of 163 on the ground and 167 passing. The Mountaineers converted on a season high 6-of-15 3rd-down conversions.
Senior running back Mike Bagnoli picked up 155-yards on 30 carries for Penn while Busler completed 11-19-0 passes for 119-yards and two touchdowns while Shaw pulled in five catches for 43 yards.
Penn remains undefeated on the season with a 3-0 overall record and is in first place in the CSFL with a 2-0 mark.
Mansfield falls to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the CSFL. The Mountaineers travel to Navy this Friday night.
