FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Defense Saves the Day for Mansfield in 7-6 Win Over Post

BOX SCORE

WATERBURY,CT - Troy Taylor intercepted a pass in the endzone with 2 seconds to play and the Mansfield defense stopped Post twice inside the 10-yard line in the final four minutes of the game to lead the Mountaineers to a 7-6 win in a CSFL football game Saturday afternoon.

Post scored first when quarterback Sir-Darryl Johnson hit La'Shaun Yates on a 6-yard touchdown pass to cap off an 11-play, 81-yard drive on the first play of the second quarter. The extra point kick failed giving post a 6-0 lead.

Mansfield scored with just a little over two minutes to play in the first half when quarterback Kode Plank hit Kevin Valentine on a slant over the middle for a 14-yard touchdown. Ryan Lose's extra point kick gave Mansfield the 7-6 halftime lead.

Each team held the other scoreless in the 3rd quarter.

Mansfield was driving in the 4th quarter when Post's Justin Dalezquece intercepted a pass and returned it for what looked to be a touchdon before Mansfield's Paul Frederick made what proved to be a game saving tackle at the Mansfield 10-yard line.

The Mansfield defense held Post to a loss of 1-yard over three plays forcing a Post field goal attempt that missed wide right. Mansfield was called for a penalty on the kick, giving Post the ball first-and-goal on the Mansfield 5- yard line. The Mansfield defense held Post to negative yardage forcing a 28-yard field goal that went wide left.

Mansfield got the ball and got the clock down to 43 seconds remaining before punting. The punt was returned to the Mansfield 42 yard line. Post drove to the Mountaineer 28 before Johnson's pass was intercepted by Taylor in the endzone.

Michael Wallace led the Mountaineer offense rushing for 105-yards on 30 carries and Kode Plank completed 8-of-16 for 78-yards and a touchdown.

Mansfield's defense was led by Solomon Isom with a game tying 10 tackles. Jake Myers had seven tackles including 2.5 sacks while Anthony Mazzone and Cody Croasdale each had seven stops  apiece.

Mansfield improves to 2-4 overall and travels to Cornell next Saturday in the season finale.
