ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Mansfield defensive, led by freshman
Ako Sayed's game-high 16-tackles,played an inspired game but couldn't overcome five Mountaineer turnovers that led directly to five Navy scores in a 45-0 setback Friday night at Rip Miller Field.
Mansfield forced Navy to punt on its first possession but a Mansfield fumble on its first offensive play of the game led a 2-yard touchdown run by Navy's David Williams for the first score of the game.
After Mansfield forced another Navy punt, Zzmarr Stone intercepted Mansfield quarterback's Kode Plank's first pass of the game and returned it 34-yards for a 14-0 Navy lead.
Navy added another first quarter touchdown after another Mansfield fumble led to a 6-yard touchdown run by David Lorio to lead 21-0 midway through the first quarter.
But the Mansfield defense toughened and didn't allow another Navy score until Adri Montecinos kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Navy recovered an onside kick to start the second half and added another touchdown later in the third quarter on fumble recovery in the endzone and added another score to take a 45-0 lead.
Mansfield had a chance to get on the scoreboard after a long kickoff return by Michael Wallace gave Mansfield a first and ten inside the Navy 20-yard line but an interception ended the drive.
Mansfield was playing without the services of head coach Dan Davis who missed the trip due to a medical condition.
Wallace led Mansfield's offense rushing for 18 yards and returning two kicks for 70 yards.
Beside Sayed, freshman Kevin Baker had 14 tackles while junior Cody Croasdale had five tackles including two sacks for 13-yards.
Mansfield falls to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the CSFL. The Mountaineers will enjoy a well-deserved week off before traveling to Post University.
Navy improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the CSFL.
