Coach Nick Mattis begins his second year as the Mansfield Mountaineer cross country and track & field head coach in the 2025-26 season.
Coach Mattis was named the head cross country and track & field coach on September 17, 2024.
In the first track and field season, Mattis made the team well known under his leadership, crowning a PSAC Outdoor champion, a PSAC championship meet record, two NCAA provisional marks, 28 conference qualifiers, and plenty of broken school records.
Cahsid Raymond earned the 200 meter outdoor champion, while setting the championship meet record at 20.96 and grabbed a silver medal in the 100 meter dash. Raymond and Marcus Quaker both landed NCAA provisional marks, with Quaker earning a spot in the heptathlon.
In terms of school broken and established records, here is the new marks under coach Mattis's tenure: Raymond (200M O, LJ O), Quaker (Heptathlon I, Decathlon O), Indoor 4x200m Relay, and the Outdoor Distance Medley Relay, while rewriting the record books with multiple new names in the top ten.
In the first cross country season, Mattis turned the cross country group into a new team, with almost all of the members reaching personal bests and setting new career moments for the team, all while joining the team midseason.
Mattis comes to Mansfield after spending 17 years at De Anza College in California as the head cross country and track and field head coach. He developed much success at De Anza, coaching 50 All-Americans and seven state champions.
Mattis led De Anza to four top five finishes and 19 top ten finishes at the CCCAA State Championships in cross country and track and field. His teams have earned 17 Coast Conference team titles and four regional championships. The men's track and field team earned a fourth place finish this past season at the CCCA Championships.
Before De Anza, Mattis had stops at Montana State and Danville Area Community College (Ill.). He received a bachelor's degree from Saint Ambrose University in 1997 and a master's from Western Illinois in 2006.
