John Evans

Evans enters his eighth season at the helm of the Mansfield Mountaineer sprint football team in 2025.

Evans was named the head coach of the Mansfield University sprint football program in January 2018. Prior to his appointment as interim head coach, Evans served as the defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers for four seasons.

Through his tenure, Mansfield has accumulated a CSFL MVP, two CSFL Offensive Player of the Year winners, three CSFL Newcomer of the Year winners, 18 First Team members, 18 Second Team members, and 66 overall All-CSFL members.

Coach Evans ranks second all-time in program history with 25 wins as a head coach, trailing only Tom Elsasser (1983-94) at 48.

In 2024, the team finished 3-5, but 3-1 in the CSFL North and was highlighted by a high powered rushing attack. With their highest rushing yards in a total season at 1,920, the team was guided by the CSFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Cahsid Raymond, who capped off his career on top of multiple leaderboards in the records, three Second Team Honors, and seven more to top 11 All-CSFL members. Jackson Taylor also led the CSFL in solo, assisted, and total tackles in his freshman season.

The 2023 season saw the Mounties finish 4-3 and 2-2 in the CSFL North. With their last win at Chestnut Hill, the Mountaineers finished with five straight .500 record or above seasons, all in the Evans era. That is the most successful stretch at any level of Mountaineer football since the five seasons from 1963-1967. Picking up four Second Team members, Mansfield landed 12 All-CSFL selections on the season.

In 2022, the Mountaineers again finished with an impressive 5-3 overall record and 2-2 CSFL North record, while landing 10 Mountaineers on the All-CSFL Team.

The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the Mountaineers continued to rack up wins the following year, where they finished 4-4 overall and 2-2 in their first full season in the CSFL Northern Division.

In 2021, Evans led ten athletes to All-CSFL recognition, including Cahsid Raymond who was named CSFL Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year. Raymond earned CSFL Rookie of the Week four times and Offensive Player of the Week three times to help the Mounties set a program-record with 13 total conference weekly awards.

Raymond was the lone Mountaineer to earn All-CSFL 1st-Team on offense, while senior Chase Moser (Defensive Line) and Kayin Berger (Defensive Back) and junior Matt Robert (Linebacker) were named to the Defensive 1st-Team.

In just his second season as head coach, Evans became the sprint football program wins leader (nine), while leading the program to the CSFL North championship game against Army, with the chance to reach the title game. The Mounties defeated Cornell for the first time and won a program-record three CSFL North games. Freshman Terrance Quaker brought home the Mounties third straight CSFL Newcomer of the Year honor to highlight 11 All-CSFL selections (seven 1st-Team, one 2nd-Team and three Honorable Mention).

The Mounties were named Twin Tiers College Team of the Year for their historic 2019 season.

In his first season as the head coach of the football program, Evans guided the Mountaineers to a 4-3 overall record, earning the most sprint football wins dating back to when the program was established in 2008. It was the most victories for any Mountaineer football team since the 2003 season when Mansfield finished 8-3 as an NCAA Division II member. Evans matched Tom Elsasser for most wins in a season by a first-year head coach at Mansfield.

Mountaineer student-athletes earned CSFL Player of the Week three times during the 2018 season. The most in Mansfield sprint football history.

Following the 2018 season, 11 student-athletes were named to All-CSFL honors including Brandon Allen as CSFL Newcomer of the Year. It marked back-to-back seasons that Mansfield had a player named to Newcomer of the Year recognition.

In his four seasons as defensive coordinator, Mansfield consistently ranked amongst the top defenses in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). Evans guided the Mounties to the top pass defense in the league in both the 2014 and 2016 seasons. Mansfield ranked second in the CSFL in interceptions in 2015 with 16 and third in 2014 with 11.

From 2014-17, nine players ranked in the top 10 of the CSFL for total tackles.

As coordinator, Evans coached 22 defensive players to All-CSFL recognition in four years including the 2017 Co-Newcomer of the Year in linebacker Josh Friebis. Six of those 22 all-league performers have been 1st Team All-CSFL selections.

Prior to Mansfield, Evans was head coach at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, N.Y. and head coach at DeSales High School in Geneva, N.Y. He was an assistant coach at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. for 10 years, helping the Cardinals to four NCAA Division III playoff appearances and national rankings in eight of 10 seasons.

Evans serves as a Regional Development Coach and Master Trainer for USA Football, presenting Player Safety Clinics to athletes around the country. He is the President of the Twin Tiers chapter of the National Football Foundation. Evans also runs two Development Camps for the NFL/Buffalo Bills.

In 2014, Evans was instrumental in bringing the NFL H.S.P.D. Camp to Karl Van Norman Field that featured over 300 high school athletes from Pennsylvania and New York. It was one of just three H.S.P.D. Camps held in Pennsylvania that year. In the summer of 2017, Evans helped bring in former NFL players Tony Collins, Jim Kubiak, and Walter Reyes to speak and coach at Mansfield's summer camp.

He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), NFL Alumni, NFL Players Association, National Football Foundation, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Evans is a graduate of the University of South Dakota with a degree in education. He was a four-year member of the football team and one-year member of the track & field team.

John Evans lives in Waterloo, NY with his wife Shelley Evans.
