Former Navy standout and NFL quarterback Jim Kubiak enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Mountaineers where he will guide the QBs and serve as offensive coordinator.

Kubiak competed in five NFL training camps and was a member of the New York Jets’ practice squad. He started two seasons in NFL Europe and was a four-year standout in the Arena Football League being named All-Rookie as a member of the Buffalo Destroyers and All-Pro for Jerry Jones’ Dallas Desperados. Kubiak trained with Peyton Manning, Vinny Testaverde, and Chad Pennington during his time in the NFL.

Kubiak earned the starting quarterback position just five games into his freshman season at Navy where he led the Midshipmen to a 24-3 victory over rival Army in 1991. He was elected team Co-Captain and was the Cooke Award Recipient (MVP). Kubiak still holds several passing records at Navy.

Following his playing career, Kubiak served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal and Qualified Surface Warfare serving as the leader of the Bridge Watch Team as Officer of the Deck. Upon completion of active duty, Kubiak received an Honorable Discharge.

Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL from 2005 to 2006. During his time with the professional program, he helped the Soul achieve a franchise best 10-6 record and its first playoff berth. He then served as the director of football operations for the Georgia Force of the AFL from 2006 to 2008, helping the franchise to back-to-back playoff berths and an overall record of 24-8.

Since 2009, Kubiak has served as the President and founder of the Western New York Quarterback Academy for local high school and college athletes. He is also the author of the book Building a Quarterback: A Guide to Quarterback Development.

Kubiak was also the radio color analyst for the University of Buffalo football program from 2009 to 2016 providing commentary for 61 live broadcasts.

He received his B.S. in political science from the United States Naval Academy in 1995.
