No. 7 Mountaineers Drop Close Top Ten Battle at No. 5 West Chester

The Mansfield field hockey team competed in a top ten contest on Wednesday afternoon.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The No. 7 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team (3-4) traveled for their third straight top ten matchup with No. 5 West Chester (5-2) on Wednesday (Sept. 24) afternoon, with the Rams coming away with a 3-2 victory over the Mountaineers.

Jenna Duke and Kaylie Ranere scored the two goals for Mansfield with Lydia Miller earning seven saves on the night.

The Rams opened the night in the second minute of the contest, scoring the first goal of the contest to start with the early 1-0 advantage.

Off a Mountaineer penalty corner, Melanie Esh had a shot opportunity blocked, but Ranere followed the shot with a rebound in the cage to tie up the score 1-1, scoring her first career goal as a Mountie.

WCU marched down the field with just fifteen seconds left in the opening quarter and put up their second goal of the afternoon to hold the 2-1 edge after an explosive first fifteen.

In the 17th minute, the red and black responded with the goal from Duke off a penalty corner and an assist from Ella du Plessis to tie the game back at 2-2.

Miller came up big, saving a crucial shot in the 23rd minute to keep the game deadlocked, heading into halftime.

West Chester blasted three early shots in the second half, but Miller made three saves in the first seven minutes of action.

The Rams sealed the game with a final goal in the 51st minute giving and had lock down defense, not allowing a shot in the remaining minutes to squeak away the 3-2 decision.
