Mounties Split Home Opener with Lock Haven

The Mansfield softball team splits their conference home opener with Lock Haven.

MANSFIELD Pa. - On Wednesday (Mar. 19) afternoon, the Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (3-7, 1-1 PSAC East) hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action against Lock Haven (7-5, 1-1 PSAC East) as the Mounties and the Bald Eagles finished the day with a split, resulting in a 4-1 game one victory for the Mountaineers and a 9-5 win in game two for Bald Eagles.

Madison Bailey, Aubrey Reinert, and Alex Reisinger all picked up two RBIs on the day.

Annabella Putnam picked up her third victory of the season, striking out three and allowed just one earned run and two hits in her complete game.

GAME 1: Mansfield 4 - Lock Haven 1

After a scoreless start through two innings, Olivia Ackerson lit up the scoreboard at Helen Lutes Field for the first time this year with an RBI single, driving in Melissa Demo. 

Putnam kept the Mountaineer 1-0 lead through the first five innings of action, allowing just one hit through her start. 

In the top of the sixth inning, Lock Haven sent a shot over the left field fence to even up the score at 1-1.

To end the sixth inning, Mansfield retook the lead and posted a 4-1 edge before the final inning of their home opener. 

After putting pressure on the Bald Eagles defense, an RBI walk by Emma Wonsick brought home the second run to retake the lead, scoring Reisinger.

Bailey used the loaded bases to put up two insurance runs with a single to give the cushion the red and black needed at win their first conference game of the season, bringing in Paige Reichard and Kylie Bornman.

Putnam picked up where she left in her home circle, earning her third victory of the year, allowing just one run and two hits through the Lock Haven lineup. 

GAME 2: Lock Haven 9 – Mansfield 5

Lock Haven started out with the early 3-0 advantage after a triple cleared the bases for the Bald Eagles to need the game two momentum to not be swept. 

Natalie Blackstone picked up the first RBI for the Mounties with an RBI single to score Reinert in the bottom of the second inning. 

Behind an RBI double and a solo shot, the Bald Eagles added two more runs to their lead, holding the 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth. 

Reisinger knocked in Sarah Shupp on an RBI double to start the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. A Reinert at-bat doubled their runs in the innings, score Reisinger to cut the deficit to 5-3. 

After an RBI single to increase their cut to 6-3, Lock Haven copied their script from the second inning with another bases clearing triple to burst out to the 9-3 advantage. 

A Reinert RBI double and a Reisinger RBI single gave life to the Mountaineers late scoring, but the Bald Eagles cleared a chance of being swept, picking up the 9-5 game two victory. 

Emma Maurer gave up just one earned run in her first appearance at home, striking out four batters in 3.1 innings of work.

UP NEXT: 
Mansfield is back in action on Friday (Mar. 21) for a doubleheader at Kutztown University. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by game two with the Golden Bears expected to start at 3 p.m. This doubleheader will not be streamed.
