Evans to Retire at End of 2025 Season

MANSFIELD – Mansfield sprint football head coach John Evans announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Evans was named the head coach of the sprint football program in 2018. He is the winningest coach in Mansfield sprint football history, with 28 victories over seven seasons at the helm of the program. Prior to his appointment, Evans served as the defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers for four seasons.

Under his direction, Mansfield accumulated a CSFL MVP, two CSFL Offensive Player of the Year winners, and three CSFL Newcomer of the Year honors along with 18 First Team, 18 Second Team, and 66 overall All-CSFL recipients.

"Coach Evans has been more than just a coach, he is the heart and soul of the Mansfield sprint football program," said Dr. Gretchen Sechrist, Mansfield campus administrator and interim vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. "His impact as a role model and leader on and off the field will continue to influence this program for years to come. We are incredibly grateful for his years of dedication to Mansfield Athletics"

"Over the years, I have had the honor to coach hundreds of outstanding student-athletes," Evans reflected. "Getting to know them and their families is so special. I have also been blessed to work in a department right alongside so many excellent coaches and role models." "Most of all, I have to thank my wife Shelley and my sons Ryan and Jordan for their continued love and support. I cannot say enough about this year's team and coaches. I truly feel we have something special going that I will cherish forever."

A national search for the next head coach of the Mountaineer football program will get underway following the conclusion of the 2025 season.
