COLCHESTER, Vt. - Four Mounties earned their first goal of the season as the Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (2-0) defeated the host Saint Michael's College (0-2), 4-1, to close out their weekend series at the Best Western Windjammer Fall Classic.Â
Five minutes into the first quarter,
Sophia Vadnais landed her first goal of the season in a scramble after her penalty corner pass came right back to her to tap it into the cage off an assist from
Amanda Duke to take the early lead.
A 2-0 score came from an infraction by the Purple Knights to give Mansfield a penalty stroke and
Leah Toskey stepped up to bury it to give the red and black an emphatic first quarter.
The team rushed out the gate early, accumulating 11 shots and six penalty corners in the first 15 minutes.
Saint Michael's made the most of their first shot on goal with a one-timer to give the host their first goal of the game, moving the contest to 2-1 heading into halftime.
Just like the first half, the Mounties dominated in the second half, posting 13 shots and earning five penalty corners.
Ella Du Plessis was credited with her first goal of the season to give Mansfield the 3-1 lead on the scoreboard.
Finishing out the scoring in the final quarter,
Melanie Esh scored off a cross from
Emily Santillana to close out the Moutaineers weekend in Vermont with the 4-1 victory.
On the day, the Mounties took 32 shots with 20 on goal, earned 15 penalty corners, and
August Lewis made five saves.
