Mountaineers Halftime Lead Slips Away Against Navy

MANSFIELD, Pa. -   The Mansfield Mountaineers sprint football team opened the season facing Navy for the Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic Game, on Saturday Sept. 21.
 
The Mounties led 19-17 at the half before the Midshipmen pulled away in the second half with a final score of 31-26.
 
Cahsid Raymond was used as a swiss-army knife, lining up all over the field. Raymond rushed for 182 yards on 15 carries including a 99 yard rushing touchdown. He had five receptions for 41 yards, and tossed a 15 yard touchdown pass.
 
Marcus Quaker was 11 for 19 with 116 yards and an interception, to go along with 58 yards on the ground and a score.
 
Jackson Taylor had 13 total tackles to lead the Mounties defense, and Brax Byrd had an interception.
 
The Mountaineers struck first on a Quaker 11 yard scamper on fourth and goal. The drive was 12 plays and 65 yards, that included a fake punt on fourth and six at the Mansfield 49 yard line. After a Nolan Zona extra point, Mansfield was up 7-0.
 
Navy responded on their drive with a three-yard run from Hunter Gennicks.
 
Navy took the lead on the last play of the first quarter with a 51 yard run from Gennicks, leading 14-7.
 
Mansfield responded on the next drive with a Raymond pass to Justice Chimics for 16 yards, bringing the score to 14-13.
 
On the following drive Byrd was able to intercept Navy quarterback Luke Wagner at the goal line.
 
That set up the longest play in Mansfield football (Any Level) history with a 99-yard rush from Raymond. Mansfield missed the two point conversion but took the lead 19-14.
 
Navy added a field goal before the half to cut it to 19-17.
 
Navy took the first drive of the second half and marched 79 yards on 12 plays and capped it off as Wagner punched it in from a yard out. They converted a two-point conversion to take the lead 25-19.
 
In the fourth quarter, Navy struck again with Gennicks's third touchdown from 11 yards out to go up 31-19.
 
The Mountianeers began to mount the comeback responding with a Braylon Fantaski punch-in from two yards out.
 
Mansfield had a final chance with 1:01 remaining. At the end the Hail Mary fell short to give Navy the 31-26 victory.
 
For the Midshipman, Gennicks lead the way, he had 29 rushes for 224 yards and 3 touchdowns.
 
Mansfield is back in action on Friday, Sept. 27 as they travel to Franklin Field to take on Penn.
