Shootout Thriller Shocks No. 10 Mounties Against Newberry

The Mansfield field hockey team went to a shootout thriller on Saturday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (4-2) went to a shootout thriller with Newberry College (5-0), but the Wolves found their rhythm to close out the weekend with a 3-2 victory.

Mansfield gained control in the early minutes, with Leah Toskey sending home her second goal of the season off an assist from Jenna Duke to put the Mounties up after just four minutes of action.

A second goal blasted into the cage just two minutes after their first with Duke doubling the score with an assist from Carli Eberly to hold the 2-0 advantage.

After a goalie change for Newberry, a quiet second quarter followed with just one penalty corner for the Wolves and a shot from Kaylie Ranere, before the two teams headed to half.

Momentum stayed in the Mountaineers favor as three penalty corners and three shots were posted in the first two minutes, including two shots by Melanie Esh.

32 minutes passed before the Wolves recorded their first shot, but a defensive save by Regan Fiorito kept the goose egg on the scoreboard for Newberry.

As the Wolves continued to create an offensive presence, the Mounties held strong with their 2-0 lead before the final fifteen minutes.

Much of the same game script happened until Newberry found the spark the team needed, scoring their first goal with seven minutes left, followed by their game tying goal with five minutes remaining to send this neutral site contest into overtime.

Mansfield tried to pounce early, earning a penalty corner just one-minute into the extra time, but could not capitalize.

Newberry followed with two shots, but no access to the cage with August Lewis and the defense making stops.

Sophia Vadnais posted another defensive save for Mansfield, saving the crucial game winner two minutes into the second overtime. Lewis made two more important saves before the teams headed to the shootout stage.

In shootouts, Newberry secured the victory, inking out a 4-2 advantage in the eight second challenge.
