Mountaineers Drop CSFL North Contest at Army

The Mansfield sprint football team headed to West Point on Saturday night.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Mansfield Mountaineer sprint football team (1-5, 1-1 CSFL North) traveled to Army West Point (5-0, 2-0 CSFL North) for their second Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) North contest of the season, but the Black Knights handed them their first divisional defeat, as the host earned a 42-21 victory.

Marcus Quaker threw for two touchdowns with 112 passing yards and rushed for 26 yards with a rushing touchdown.

Marcus Melle had a career day, catching five receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Jackson Taylor had nine tackles and a tackle for loss, Austin Bayer recovered his second fumble of the year and Brax Bryd caught his second interception of the season.

Army took control of the first 30 minutes, storming out to a 28-0 lead at halftime, and continued their success in their second half by scoring another 14 points in their victory, while the Mounties posted all of their 21 points in the second half.

Army's fast paced offense was the recipe of the day, starting off with a quick two play sweep that led to a 21-yard rushing touchdown for the first score of the afternoon.

Three more touchdowns ensued for the Black Knights, grabbing another rushing touchdown to end the first quarter 14-0, before two more endzone trips silenced the Mounties with a 28-0 lead at halftime.

The Black Knights scored their final two touchdowns of the afternoon in the third quarter, just 96 seconds apart to hold the 42-0 halfway through the third quarter.

Quaker scored the first touchdown of the day for the Mounties with a one-yard rushing touchdown on top of a 13-play drive.

Melle slimmed down the lead with two receiving touchdowns in the final quarter. 35-yard and 30-yard catches capitalized the final drives for the senior as end the afternoon with the Black Knights remaining undefeated with a 42-21 victory.

Mansfield outgained Army in the air, posting 218 to 172 yards. The ground and pound method worked for the Black Knights, who averaged 7.0 rushing yards per attempt and nabbing multiple rushing touchdowns.
