Lewis Breaks Program's Career Wins Mark as Mounties Down Slippery Rock

The Mansfield field hockey team competed in conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

MANSFIELD, Pa. - August Lewis earned her 33rd career victory as a goalkeeper, the most in program history, as the No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (8-5, 2-2 PSAC) battled Slippery Rock (2-9, 0-6 PSAC) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on Tues. (Oct. 14) afternoon, ending in a 1-0 victory for the Mounties.

Lewis now tops the program's historic list of goalkeepers with her 33rd career victory, passing the Mansfield Hall of Famer Heather Long, to hold her second career program record, also accumulating her 22nd career shutout today, which she had already held the most.

Mansfield started the first quarter strong with multiple offensive opportunities. With a total of five penalty corners, Sophia Vadnais gave Mansfield the only goal of the game off an assist from Ella Du Plessis

Slippery Rock won the possession battle in a quiet second quarter, with Lewis saving the only shot of the 15 minutes as the two teams headed to halftime with the Mounties up 1-0.

Slippery Rock came out of the half and put on more offensive pressure with seven shots, including five shots on goal.

Lewis was put to the test to get the win when Slippery Rock had a penalty stroke with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. In a shock to the crowd, The Rock earned a penalty stroke, but the Mountaineer goalkeeper kept the shutout alive.

After the emphatic stop for the Mounties. Vadnais earned her third defensive save of the year to keep the opponent off the scoreboard as Mansfield held the slim advantage, heading into the final quarter.

Mansfield took a commanding offensive push in the final quarter of action. The Mountaineer defense stayed strong in the final minutes of play and did not allow a shot from Slippery Rock to hold the home field advantage and earn the 1-0 victory.
