Mansfield Athletics to Host Military Appreciation Weekend; Mounties to Unveil POW/MIA Chair of Honor

Mansfield is set to host Military Appreciation Weekend Sept. 22 – 24. The Mounties will unveil a POW/MIA Chair of Honor.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Department of Athletics is set to host the Mounties' 2023 Military Appreciation Weekend (Friday, Sept. 22 – Sunday, Sept. 24). The athletic event schedule is a busy one and several special events are planned.

On Friday, Sept. 22, the nationally-ranked field hockey team will host Maryville at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 23, the sprint football team will host Army West Point under the lights at 7 p.m. The Saturday schedule also features a neutral-site field hockey match between Maryville and Frostburg State (11 a.m.). On Sunday, the Mountie field hockey team will cap the busy weekend at home with an 11 a.m. match vs. Frostburg State.

Admission for all home events during Military Appreciation Weekend will be free for veterans, and current service men and women.

Highlighting Saturday's events will be the unveiling of the POW/MIA Chair of Honor.

The chair will sit proudly by the steps at Karl Van Norman Field to serve as a symbol which honors prisoners of war and missing in action soldiers. The importance of the POW/MIA symbols lies in its continued visibility, a constant reminder of the plight of America's unreturned veterans.
"Mansfield has long been known for its commitment to and support of the military and its status as a Yellow Ribbon Program participant. The Student Veteran Organization provides mentors to incoming student veterans and the Military Resource Center offers a wide array of services and programs to support Mansfield student veterans," said Director of Athletics Peggy Carl. "This celebration is Athletics' way of honoring those students and publicly thanking the men and women who have served this country so bravely."

"We have come together as a department to create this day of celebration and honor and are humbled by the service that our active and veteran military students, staff, and faculty have provided throughout their careers," Carl added.

Additionally, the Mansfield field hockey team will be selling commemorative "Salute the Troops" t-shirts for $10 throughout the weekend. Mansfield students can also purchase t-shirts in the Manser Dining Hall, throughout the week leading up to the weekend.

Other special events for the weekend include raffles to benefit military constituents, ceremonial coin tosses, a special American flag presentation and much more.

The Mansfield Department of Athletics is honored to host this year's Military Appreciation Weekend. The Mounties thank all those who serve our country and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our freedom.
