#10 Mansfield Upsets #2 Shippensburg with 2-0 Shutout in Nationally Ranked Battle

The Mansfield field hockey team pulled off the nationally ranked shutout on Wednesday afternoon with a dominant shutout.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The No. 10 Mansfield Mountaineer field hockey team (4-0) hosted their 2023 home opener versus No. 2 Shippensburg (3-2) in nonconference action, which saw the Mountaineers knock off the nationally ranked Raiders in this all-important Division II battle with a 2-0 shutout victory.

For the team, this marks the first 4-0 start since 2007. This also marks the Mounties first victory over the opponent since 2007.

This also stands as their first ranked win since 2022 when they defeated No. 4 Kutztown, 2-0.

It was a historic day for August Lewis, as well, as she picked up another shutout, her third of the season, and tying the school record of 13 shutouts in her career.

As the nationally ranked foes started the clash, the two teams combined for 12 shots throughout the first quarter. Alex Esterling saw her shot land the first goal of the game for Mansfield as the home team took the 1-0 lead into the second.

After the match saw back and forth momentum, the second goal of the game by Ella Du Plessis sent the Mounties fans into a frenzy as the nationally ranked contest saw Mansfield take an early 2-0 lead into halftime.

Throughout the final half, the Raiders pressured six penalty corners on the backline of Hannah Meyer, Riley Kleinfelter, and Sophia Vadnais, but the Mounties held strong throughout the game to complete the 2-0 shutout victory.
