SB: Goff Milestone and Vonstein Homer Highlight Mountaineers' 2023 Regular-Season Finale

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Danielle Goff recorded her 100th strikeout of the season and Kayla Vonstein homered to lead the Mountaineer softball team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader, but East Stroudsburg University took both games on the road at Helen Lutes Field on Thursday afternoon, April 27.

The Mounties fell 3-2 in game one and 10-3 in the nightcap.

Needing six strikeouts to reach the century mark on the season, Goff struck out four hitters in game one before fanning three Warriors in game two to raise her total to 101 on the season, becoming just the fourth player in program history to reach the milestone.

Goff surpassed 200 strikeouts for her career during the Mountaineers' doubleheader at Shippensburg on Tuesday.

Vonstein left the yard for the first time in her career in the third inning of game two to highlight the offense.

GAME ONE: ESU 3, Mounties 2

The Warriors used three hits to plate a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to build a 2-0 lead early.

The Mounties loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third, leading to a clutch two-RBI single down the left-field line by Fallon Kelley to tie the game at 2-2.

The Warriors, however, responded with a solo run in the fourth to regain the lead, 3-2.

ESU's starting pitcher Paige Zigmund did not surrender another win from there to seal the game one victory for the Warriors.

Goff was dominate in the losing effort, going the full seven innings, limiting ESU to three runs on nine hits.

The Mounties finished with eight hits, led by a pair from seniors Morgan Berndt and Morgan Mesaris.

GAME TWO: ESU 10, Mounties 3

The Warriors scored a solo run in each of the first three innings to build an early 3-0 lead.

The Mounties, however, cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third when Vonstein sent her first home run over the left-center field wall.

However, the Warriors responded with six runs in the top of the fourth inning to start to put the game out of reach.

The Warriors scored in the top of the sixth, before Mesaris drove in a run in the bottom half to round out the scoring.

Berardi reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, while Vonstein homered and was hit by a pitch.

Annabella Putnam landed the loss in game two, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Goff tossed 3.2 innings in relief and was charged with one unearned run, adding three strikeouts.

For ESU, Leigh Ann Jenkins picked up the victory, limiting the Mounties to three runs in 6.1 innings, adding nine strikeouts.
