Mounties' offense comes alive to split with Kutztown

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mansfield University baseball team's offense exploded for 21 runs on 30 hits during Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader to lead the Mounties to a split with Kutztown University at Joseph Shaute Field. The Mounties took game one, 8-3, before dropping the nightcap in heartbreaking fashion, 14-13 in 11 innings.

The Mounties benefited from top-notch starting pitching and a complete offensive attack as they belted out a game-high 14 hits on their way to eight runs, while Austin Lewis tossed another gem in the circle.

Lewis picked up his fourth victory, limiting the Golden Bears to three runs on six hits through 6.1 innings, while fanning seven Kutztown hitters.

Seven different Mountaineers finished with multiple hits, led by Brittain Shander with three. Zachary ShertzerJosh Farina (2B), and Zach Spray each drove in a pair of runs, while Farina and Shander led MU with two runs scored.

The Mounties came out of the gates hot, plating three runs in the top of the first inning thanks to RBIs by Shertzer, Farina and Spray.

KU plated a pair over the second and third inning, but MU answered with five runs over their next two at-bats to build an 8-2 lead heading into the fifth. Five different Mountaineers drove in runs during the rally.

The Golden Bears scored a run in the top of the seventh, but MU closer Josh Colon entered the game for the final two outs to secure the victory.

In the nightcap, the Mounties controlled the contest through the midway point and led 13-5 through seven innings.

However, the Golden Bears struck for five runs in the eighth, before blasting a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to knot the score at 13-13 and send the game into extra innings.

Neither squad could push across the game-winner through the 10th inning, but Kutztown hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th before shutting the Mounties down in the bottom half to secure the victory.

For Mansfield, Eric Gustofson threw five quality innings, and had Mansfield in position for the victory after limiting Kutztown to five runs on four hits and striking out four.

The Mounties' offense continued to excel in game two as they piled up 16 hits, including five extra-base hits. Jackson Halla and Jacob Houtz homered, while Halla added a triple and Houtz added four RBIs to lead the Mountaineer offense. Spray (2B) and Shander secured three hits, while Ryan Scott (two RBI) and Marcus Nales (two runs) both finished with two.

Jason Wolff homered twice, including the game-tying three-run shut to lead the Golden Bears on offense. Jimmy Kerley hit the game-winning home run. Gavin Moretski secured the victory, tossing three scoreless innings in relief.
