UPDATED: Mounties’ Offense Continues to Roll in 20-4 Victory Over Dominican University of New York

CARY, N.C. - The Mansfield University baseball team (3-3 overall) won their second game in as many days as they downed Dominican University of New York, 20-4, in non-conference action on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The Mountaineer offense scored 10 or more runs for the second time in as many days.

Sophomore catcher Ryan Verbonitz continued his tear at the plate on the weekend, finishing 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and his second big fly of the season to lead the Mountaineer offense.

Both Verbonitz and Mercedes dove in four runs, while Zachary Shertzer, Jeffrey Coakley, Zach Spray, and Jacob Houtz all finished with multiple RBI. Houtz, Spray and Kurt Biesecker doubled, Coakley and Shertzer tripled, while Marcus Nales and Verbonitz left the yard.

Sophomore Austin Lewis was credited with the victory on the mound after allowing just one run in five complete innings, while striking out a game-high eight hitters in his second start of the season. Bobby Curry closed out the final four innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, while striking out two.

After allowing one run in the first inning, Lewis shut down the Chargers and did not allow a run, while stranding five runners on base over the ensuing four innings.

The Mountaineers scored in every inning until the ninth, highlighted by a five-spot in the second frame and a four-spot in the top of the eighth.

For Dominican (N.Y.), starter Robert Liriano was handed the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) in 1 and 1/3 inning of work. David Knepper led the offense, driving in two runs as a pinch hitter.
