Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – The Mansfield University sprint football team fell to Caldwell University 33-17 on the road in their season opener on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Mansfield kicks off the year 0-1, while Caldwell improves to 1-0.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 10-0 lead thanks to a field goal and an early first-half touchdown.

The Cougars opened the second half scoring by taking an interception all the way to the house to make it 16-0.

However, the Mounties rallied for 10 straight points thanks to a field goal from
Logan Shull and a Touchdown from
Dion Mathers to
Eugene Haynes to make it 16-10 with 8:50 to go in the third.

Caldwell converted a field goal attempt to go up 19-10 to end the third, but MU immediately responded to open the fourth when Mather connected with Beu Schellinger from 35 yards out to cut the deficit from 19-17.

However, that was the last time the Mounties put points on the board, while the Cougars ended the contest on a 14-0 run to close out the victory.

Sophomore
Cahsid Raymond led the offense with 112 rushing yards and 8.6 yards per carry, while Quaker added 35 yards on the ground on eight attempts.

Haynes (74 yards) and Schellinger (35 yards) led the Mounties in receiving with a touchdown. Mather threw for 107 yards through the air in his first game with a touchdown.

Senior
Matt Robert led the defense with 12 total tackles, including one sack for a loss of seven yards.

Mansfield finished with two more first downs and won the penalty battle, but the Cougars took advantage of three turnovers on their way to victory.

The Mounties host Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Sept. 24 for their home opener at Karl Van Norman Field beginning at 7 p.m. under the lights in CSFL North action.
