Esterling Goals Lift Mounties to OT at #2 Shippensburg; Raiders win 4-3

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Junior Alex Esterling (Wilmington, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) scored a goal at the end of each half to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to overtime against 2nd-ranked Shippensburg University, but the Raiders scored in the extra period to steal an exciting midweek game at the Robb Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 14.

The non-conference game slides the Mounties to 2-2 on the year, while the Raiders remain perfect at 4-0.

Esterling's first goal came unassisted in the final minute of the first half to tie the game at 2-2.

Shippensburg reclaimed the lead in the 43rd minute with their third score.

However, Esterling connected for the equalizer once again with just under three minutes to go off a helper from junior Saramae Esterling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless eight minutes to open the extra period, the Raiders scored the golden goal off the stick of Tess Jedeloo to steal the victory.

In the first half, the Raiders built an early 2-0 lead before sophomore Kenedy Stroup (Millerstown, Pa. / Greenwood) cut the deficit in half with her fourth goal of the season, unassisted in the 13th minute.

The Mounties were very efficient, connected on three of their eight shot on goal attempts, but the Raiders kept the pressure on all game, winning 32-13 in shots and 11-4 on corners.

August Lewis (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) landed the loss in net for MU, finishing with a game-high 12 saves, while Lindsay Tripodo picked up her fourth victory on the season, collecting three stops for SU.

The Mounties have the weekend off before returning to Mansfield on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 p.m. to host Mercyhurst University in non-conference action.
