SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior
Assaf Lowengart and junior
Josh Farina combined for four hits and five RBI to lead the Mansfield University baseball team to an 8-5 victory in game one of a non-conference doubleheader against Slippery Rock University on the road on Tuesday afternoon, April 12. The Mounties fell 3-1 in the nightcap.
With the split, the Mounties move to 13-18, while the Rock move to 19-9 overall.
Lowengart drove in three runs and homered, while Farina continued his hot streak with two RBI on two hits, while scoring twice. Senior
Ben Osborne and sophomore
Marcus Nales also drove in runs, while senior
Samuel Freedman and freshman
Jacob Houtz added doubles.
The Mounties exploded for five runs in the second inning off RBI from Farina and Nales before Lowengart sent his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to plate three runs and give the Mounties a 5-0 lead.
The Rock responded with three runs in the second and another in the third to cut the deficit to one.
However, the Mounties answered with a run in three straight innings to extend their lead back to three at 8-4. Osborne and Farina both singled in runs, while Freedman drew a bases loaded walk to help the Mounties extend their advantage.
The Rock pushed across a run in the seventh but junior
Josh Colon shut the door from there to wrap up the Mounties' game one victory.
Sophomore
Bobby Curry (2-2) earned the victory on the mound, entering in relief to toss 3.1 scoreless innings. Colon allowed one run in 1.2 innings before shutting the door to earn his second save.
For the Rock, Robert Herr allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings to land the loss. Conner Hamilton homered and Joel Spishock drove in three runs to lead the offense.
In game two, Slippery Rock opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Mansfield got on the board in the top of the fourth when sophomore
Kurt Biesecker singled to plate sophomore
Shay Gustafson to cut the deficit to two.
However, the Rock added an insurance run in the fifth and did not give up another score the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Freedman collected two hits and Biesecker drove in the lone run to lead the Mountaineer offense. Junior
Todd Erney gave the Mounties five-quality innings in the losing effort, allowing three runs (two earned) on just four hits, adding five strikeouts.
For the Rock, JT Wolke earned the victory in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, strikeout out three. Jon Kozarian led their offense with a two-RBI double.
The Mounties return to action on Friday, April 15 when they take the short trip to PSAC East foe Lock Haven University.
