WILMINGTON, Del. – The Mansfield University softball team fell twice on the road to Goldey Beacom College, 7-3 and 8-5 in non-conference action on Sunday, March 27.
The Mounties fall to 4-8 overall and the Lightning improve to 11-12.
In game one, the Lightning scored the first run in the bottom of the first, but the Mounties struck back with two runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Junior

Lauren Watson walked and moved into scoring position off a wild pitch. Goff came around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior
Abbey Woodard before Watson crossed home on an RBI ground out to second off the bat of senior
Rebecca Pizzo.
MU took the lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore
Kayla Vonstein hit into a fielder's choice to plate Pizzo, who led off the frame with a triple.
However, the Lightning used a four-run bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, before adding an insurance run in the sixth to close out the victory.
Goff was dealt the loss on the mound for MU, allowing seven runs on nine hits, while fanning two in six innings. Four Mountaineers recorded hits, led by a 2-for-4 effort by Vonstein. Vonstein, Pizzo and Woodard drove in runs.
For Goldey Beacom, Chrissy Jordan earned the victory in the circle, going the distance, allowing three runs on five hits. Bianca Newsom went 3-for-4 to lead the offense.
In game two, the Mountaineers came out of the gates hot, scoring four runs in the top of the first to go on top. The first four hitters in the Mountaineer lineup all reached safely, while Watson and sophomore
Gabby Drumm drove in runs to highlight the rally.
However, the Lightning scored a run in the second before pushing across a pair of runs in the third and fourth to take their first lead, 5-4.
The Mounties, however, answered with the equalizer in the top of the fifth when Watson drove in freshman
Natalie Blackstone with a double.
The Lightning responded once more with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be the game winners, earning the sweep.
Hannah Davis led the Lightning offense with three hits, including a double and a triple. Morgan Mclane threw 6.2 innings in relief to earn the win, limiting the Mounties to one run on three hits.
Watson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Vonstein added a double and Drumm drove in a run to lead the Mountaineer offense. Sophomore
Maddy Jean allowed five runs in four innings before handing the ball to sophomore Fallen Kelley, who was charged with three runs through the final two innings.
The Mounties open PSAC Easy competition next weekend, beginning Saturday, April 2 when they travel to Lock Haven University for a noon doubleheader.
