#9 Field Hockey leads early, falls late to #2 Shippensburg

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Freshman Lotte Dams (Bilthoven, Netherlands / Het Nieuwe Lyceum) scored her first collegiate goal to give the No. 9 Mansfield University field hockey team (6-6, 1-3 PSAC) an early lead, but No. 2 Shippensburg University (9-1, 3-1 PSAC) scored three goals in the second half to steal a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory at Karl Van Norman Field on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15.

After a defensive battle to open the first 28 minutes, Dams collected a pass from junior Saramae Radel (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove) and beat the keeper for her first goal to give the Mounties a 1-0 lead.

The Mounties controlled possession for much of the first half and led in shots (13-2) and corners (5-1).

However, the Raiders began to flip the script coming out of the break and broke through for the equalizing goal in the first 30 seconds of the second half.

The game remained locked at 1-1 for the next 16 minutes until Shippensburg connected for the game-winner in the 45th minute. The Raiders scored an insurance goal five minutes later to round out the scoring.

There were five green cards dealt in the contest and the Raiders scored their final two goals with the on-field advantage.

The Mounties did not record a shot on goal in the second half.

Dams, senior Olivia Wagner (New Cumberland, Pa. / Cedar Cliff), and junior Kalin Duke (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) led the Mounties with two shots on goal.

Sophomore August Lewis (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) made a game-high eight saves, leaving the net when she needed and laying out for two stops to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance.

The Raiders finished with three defensive saves, while Lindsay Tripodo made five saves to earn the victory in goal. Tess Jedeloo, Chloe Prettyman, and Lilly Cantabene scored the Shippensburg goals.

Field Hockey hosts Frostburg State in non-conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. at Karl Van Norman Field.
