Young Mounties Overcome Obstacles to Tie West Chester In Double Overtime, Snap 15-Game Skid With Golden Rams

MANSFIELD – It took two halves, two overtimes and two fields, but the Mansfield University women's soccer team used a goal by freshman Katelyn Rueppel and 13 saves by senior goalkeeper Stephanie Moir to tie Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East foe West Chester University, 1-1 on a stormy Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8.

With the tie, the Mounties (0-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 PSAC East) snap a 15-game losing streak against the Golden Rams (0-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 PSAC East). The Mounties last decision against West Chester came in a 2-2 tie in Mansfield in 2007.

With the game in a 1-1 standstill and 36:16 remaining on the clock, lightning struck and sent the game into a delay. The rain then followed, making the all-grass MU Soccer Field unplayable to finish the contest.

However, the game was moved to the turf on Mansfield's Karl Van Norman Field for the remainder of regulation and the two overtime periods.

The Mounties not only avoided a letdown with the field change, but they also upped their intensity on defense, fighting off 10 West Chester shots in the second half and three in the overtime periods.

Freshman Danielle Drain and sophomore Emily Smith each fired off shots in the closing seconds of regulation and the second overtime, but could not break through, securing the tie.

Moir was outstanding in goal for MU, fighting off 25 (15 on goal) Golden Rams' shots to make a game-high 13 stops and earn the win. Audrey Schweuzerhof made three saves for WCU.

The Mounties four shots on goal came from four different players, while Rueppel led the team with three total shots.

The Mounties are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. when they travel to PSAC East foe Bloomsburg University.
