Katelyn Rueppel netted her second goal of the season and sophomore
Faith Cameron registered her first career shutout to lead the Mansfield University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan College in non-conference action on Tuesday night, Sept. 14 in front of an electric crowd at Karl Van Norman Field.
With the victory the Mounties improve to 1-2-1 overall and end a four-year winning drought at home. The last Mountaineer home victory came against University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on Sept. 17, 2016.
The Mounties took a 1-0 lead in the 14
th minute after Rueppel weaved through the heart of the Red Hawks' defense and fired a heat seeker past the upper-90 of the keeper.
The Mounties extended their lead to two in the 85
th minute when sophomore
Taylar Luckenbill put the pressure on with a perfectly executed free kick from 35 yards out, resulting in an own goal by Roberts Wesleyan (0-4-1 overall).
Cameron made seven saves to earn her first career win in net for the Mounties. The shutout was the first by a Mountaineer keeper since senior
Stephanie Moir did so in a win over Shepherd in September of 2019.
The backline duo of Luckenbill and senior
Meghan Noone led the defensive charge for the Mounties, taking aggressive angles at Redhawks' attackers and making the proper clears all night long.
The Mounties, who did not record a corner in their last contest at Bloomsburg, won the battle 5-4, while tying Roberts Wesleyan with 12 shots. The Mounties had six shots in each half, led by two from sophomore
Bailey Dockman and freshmen
Alexandra Benedict and
Danielle Drain.
Nicolette Knauf was charged with the loss in goal for the Redhawks, finishing with four saves. Four Redhawks finished with a pair of shots.
Mansfield is back in action on Saturday night, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. when they travel to East Stroudsburg University for a PSAC East match.
