MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Junior
Alexis Easling homered and the Mansfield University softball team led twice in game one, but Millersville University used an explosive offense that totaled eight home runs on its way to a 16-7, 13-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East sweep on the final day of April at Seaber Softball Stadium.
Â
The Mounties (3-26, 3-26 PSAC East) came out of the gates hot when junior
Lacey O'Donnell and seniors
Alex Hein and
Joelle Snyder all reached safely, and senior
Hannah Breitigan followed with a single to drive in O'Donnell and Hein to give the Mounties a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Marauders (21-17, 14-16 PSAC East) took their first lead of the day in the top of the second when they plated three runs, but sophomore
Danielle Goff stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage.
Â
The Marauders extended their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third, but the Mounties rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth to regain a 6-4 advantage. O'Donnell ripped a single to center to plate Goff and junior
Abbey Woodard, before Snyder followed with a triple to score junior
Meghan McGinley and O'Donnell.
Â
However, Millersville continued with a relentless offensive attack, belting a three-run home run and RBI double to retake an 8-6 lead the next half inning.
Â
Easling belted her second home run of the year, a solo shot to left, to cut the deficit to one, but Millersville continued their theme of the afternoon, responding with their second and third home run of the game to highlight a four-run fifth inning to extend their lead to 12-7.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the Marauders hit their fifth homer of the game and scored four runs to secure the 16-7 run-rule victory.
Â
O'Donnell, Snyder and Breitigan each drove in two runs, while O'Donnell and Snyder finished with multiple hits and Easling hit her second home run of the season. Goff landed the loss, allowing nine runs through 5 and 2/3 innings.
Â
Morgan Crutcher earned the victory on the mound, lasting the full six innings and allowing seven runs (four earned). Faith Willenbrock hit two home runs to lead the Millersville offense.
Â
In the nightcap, the Marauders continued their hot offensive afternoon, plating seven runs on five hits and a Mountaineer error to build an early 7-0 lead.
Â
The Mounties got on the board in the third when freshman
Anastasia Berardi singled to score Breitigan, making it 7-1.
Â
That was the final Mountaineer run, however, as the Marauders plated six runs over the third and fourth inning to finalize the 13-1 run-rule victory.
Â
Freshman
Gabby Drumm was 2-for-2 with a double, Breitigan was 1-for-3 with a run and Berardi notched the Mountaineers lone RBI to lead the offense. Easling landed the loss and Millersville's Maddie Guinane earned the win on the mound.
Â
Gabi Turner, Willenbrock and Aleese Angelo homered to lead the Marauder's offense.
Â
The Mounties host Millersville tomorrow afternoon, May 1 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
