Stayin' Alive! Mounties Blank Bloomsburg 3-0 to Keep PSAC Postseason Hopes Alive

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Three sophomores scored and August Lewis registered her seventh shutout of the season to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Bloomsburg University on the road on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 27.

The Mountaineers are in a three-way tie with Slippery Rock University and Indiana University for the sixth and final PSAC postseason playoff berth.

IUP defeated Mercyhurst, 2-0 and Slippery Rock downed Seton Hill, 7-0 this afternoon to keep pace with the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers avenged a 3-2 shootout (1-0) loss to the Huskies earlier this season.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Kalin Duke got the Mounties (9-8, 4-5 PSAC) on the board when she connected on a one-timer from fellow sophomore Hannah Meyer in the 22nd minute.

Sophomore Saramae Radel doubled the Mountaineer lead at the 41:04 mark when she capitalized on a penalty stroke for her seventh goal of the season.

Meyer found the back of the cage just over a minute later to put the exclamation point on the victory.

The Mountaineers took advantage of their opportunities as they narrowly edged out Bloomsburg (7-10, 1-8 PSAC) in both shots (12-11) and penalty corners (7-5).

Lewis earned the seventh shutout and win of her Mountaineer goalkeeping career, finishing the afternoon with three stops.

Radel led the Mountaineers' offensive attack with three shots, all coming on goal. Duke connected on her only shot, while Meyer and sophomore Kelsey Robertson each recorded two shots on goal.

Abby Shaffer was dealth the loss in cage, finishing with three saves. Ayden McFarland finished with a team-high two shots on goal for BU.

The Mounties travel to No. 2 West Chester University on Saturday, Oct. 30 a 1 p.m. for a PSAC contest.
