Sprint Football Begins Two-Game Road Trip at Alderson Broaddus Saturday

PHILIPPI, W.V. – The Mansfield University sprint football team Begins Two-Game Road Trip at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.V. on Saturday, Oct. 23 for a noon kick-off.

Alderson Broaddus is a member of the Collegiate Sprint Football League South, making the game a non-conference contest.

The Mounties fell to Army, 19-11 on a rainy-day last Saturday, suffering their first CSFL North loss on the season. The Mountaineers next conference game is on the final day of the regular season, Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. at Karl Van Norman field against Caldwell University.

The Mountaineers are 2-1 in the CSFL North and slide to third place. However, the Mountaineers showdown to end the season is against Caldwell, who is currently tied with Army for the top spot in the North with a 2-0 record.

CONFERENCE AWARDS
Freshman defensive back Kendall Smith Jr. was named Co-CSFL Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon, Oct. 18.

The Mounties move their record to five straight Rookie of the Week honors, bringing home the award every week of the CSFL 2021 season.

Smith also improves the Mounties weekly-awards total to 10. Freshman Cahsid Raymond has brought home Rookie of the Week four times and Offensive Player of the Week three times, while freshman defensive back Nakiem Scott also earned Defensive Player of the Week after week one.

Smith was all over the field on Saturday against Army West Point, creating two turnovers, including an interception and a fumble recovery that he took 40 yards to the house for the Mounties lone touchdown.

LAST TIME OUT
Trailing by multiple scores entering the final quarter, the Mounties scored a defensive touchdown and kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Mounties fell to Army West Point on a wet and rainy Karl Van Norman Field on Saturday, Oct.16.

The Mountaineers rallied for 11 points in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to eight, but clock was not on their side and the Black Knights hung on for the victory.

The Mansfield defensive unit forced three turnovers, including a 40-yard fumble recovery touchdown by Kendall Smith Jr. scored the lone Mountaineer touchdown, while adding an Interception. Freshman kicker Logan Shull drilled a 21-yard field goal to round out the scoring for the Mounties.

Senior Chase Moser and junior Matt Robert each had 16 tackles for the Mounties. Moser added 1.5 sacks on the day.

Momentum swung in Army's direction when Mountaineer star signal caller Raymond went down late in the second half and wasn't able to return. Raymond is set to return to action on Saturday.

The Battlers are under new leadership after Matt Perotti was named interim head coach of the program on Oct. 12. Perotti took over for Brad Jett, who was the inaugural head coach during the programs first season in 2019.

The Battlers joined the CSFL in 2019, finishing with a 1-6 overall record. The Mountaineers wont the first ever meeting, 42-18. David Butler broke the century mark with 111 yards rushing and two scores.

The Battlers are in search of their first win in 2021 and are coming off a 41-7 defeat at Caldwell University last Saturday.

The Battlers are averaging 119.2 yards per game on offense, while their defense is allowing 401.6 yards per game and 45 points allowed per game.

10/23/2009: Desmen Johnson rushes for 121-yards and game-winning touchdown to lead Mansfield to 26-14 win over Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Desmen Johnson rushed for 121-yards and scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown on a 7-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter to lift Mansfield to a 26-14 win over Princeton on a wet Powers Field at Princeton Stadium Friday night.

Johnson, who set a MU sprint football record with his 121-yards on 30 carries, capped off a three-play 21-yard drive to break a 14-14 tie. The drive was set up by David Wallace's fumble-recovery on a muffed punt catch.

Mansfield failed to convert on the PAT-attempt after Johnson's touchdown but held a 20-14 lead. Mansfield would score the game's last three touchdowns, including two by Johnson on a 3-yard run and 7-yard pass to pull out the win.
