CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – Timely offense and four interceptions on defense led the Mansfield University sprint football team to a 31-14 road victory over Chestnut Hill College on Friday night, Oct. 1.
A week after allowing 55 points, the Mountaineers (2-1, 1-0 CSFL North) held Chestnut Hill (1-2, 1-1 CSFL South) to 14 points, while forcing five turnovers and recording three sacks.
Senior
Kayin Berger (two) and freshmen
Nick Zeigler and
Kendall Smith Jr. all intercepted their first passes of the season.
The Griffins matched MU with 171 yards through the air and added 177 yards on the ground, but every time Chestnut Hill gained momentum on offense the Mounties created a turnover.
Sophomore
Kade Showers finished with a team-high 11 tackles followed by freshmen
Gage Aumick (eight) and
Gavin Hinman (seven). Four Mountaineers recorded sacks, junior
Brenden Sofo forced a fumble and Aumick recovered a fumble.
On offense, freshman
Cahsid Raymond continued his record-setting freshman campaign, finishing 14-for-28 with 150 yards and two touchdowns through the air and adding 138 yards and another score on 13 rushes. Raymond notches his third straight game with a passing and rushing touchdown and 100 or more yards on the ground and through the air. The rookie has a rushing touchdown of 40 or more yards in every game.
Freshman
Bryan Bogaczyk and
Dominic Cherry had their most productive game in the back field. Bogaczyk finished with 26 yards and a score and Cherry finished second behind Raymond with 47 yards and a long rush of 27.
Freshman
LaTrenton Randle led the receiving core with five receptions for 60 yards, while senior
Eugene Haynes and freshman
Isaiah Grunden each pulled in a touchdown.
Freshman
Logan Shull remained perfect on PATs, finishing 4-of-4, while adding a 30-yard field goal.
Neither team could get anything going offensively and after a few stalled MU drives the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.
However, Zeigler snatched his first interception of his career in the closing seconds of the period to set up the Mountaineers' offense up deep in Griffins' territory.
Bogaczyk hauled in an 11-yard reception from Raymond and Mountaineers marched down to the Griffins' four-yard line, but the Griffins forced a turnover-on-downs to keep the scored deadlocked.
The Mountaineer defense came through again to set up the Mountie offense on the ensuing possession when Berger intercepted his first pass of the season.
Raymond followed with a 25-yard scamper to set up a 30-yard field goal by Shull to give the Mounties a 3-0 lead.
Berger picked off his second pass on the night on the next Chestnut Hill possession, making it three drives in a row with a Mountaineer interception.
Like the first turnover created by Berger, the Mounties walked away with points thanks to the first rushing touchdown of Bogaczyk's career, making it 10-0.
Chestnut Hill opened the second half with an eight-play drive that ended in a touchdown, but Mansfield countered with a touchdown on the very next play when Raymond took a keeper 65 yards to the house.
Following back-to-back turnover-on-downs for both schools, Chestnut Hill was marching deep into Mountaineer territory when Smith Jr. notched the fourth MU interception on the night.
With 11:33 to go in the game, Showers blocked a punt and Raymond found Grundon on an 18-yard post in the back of the end zone to extend the advantage to 24-7.
The Griffins added a touchdown late to make it 24-14. However, on the next drive, Raymond through a 22-yard strike to Haynes to put the Mounties up three scores and put the game out of reach.
The Mounties cross the border to New York to take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 in CSFL North action.
