GLENVILLE, W.V. – The Mansfield University baseball teamed forced two straight extra-inning games, but Fairmont State University used game-winning home runs in each contest to win a pair of non-conference games, 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday, March 1 at Glenville's Sue Morris Complex.
Mansfield (3-5 overall) got the scoring going in game one with two runs in the first after junior
Nate Cotton drove in senior
Brady Mengel and sophomore
Brittain Shander with a single to right field.
The Falcons (5-5 overall) knotted the score at two with two runs in the third, but junior
Hunter DePrimo and freshman
Todd Erney followed with a combined five shutout innings to lead the Mountaineers into extras.
Neither team platted a run in the eighth, but Fairmont connected on a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.
DePrimo allowed one earned run in six complete innings while striking out seven and Erney (0-2) struck out five in 2 and 1/3 inning of work in the loss, allowing four earned runs.
Cotton went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead the Mounties.
For the Falcons, Jacob Goodnight was 3-for-5 with two RBI and PJ Lanham was 2-for-5 with a grand slam. Logan Smith allowed two earned runs in eight complete innings and JT Stegmaier earned the win with a scoreless ninth.Â
In game two, the Mounties mirrored their first inning efforts in game one by plating two quick runs. Shander scored on an errand pick off throw and Mengel grounded out to short which knocked in senior
Josh Kulina.
Fairmont plated three runs in the third to take their first lead of the game, 3-2. The Mounties responded with a run in their half to knot the game at three after Kulina scored on a wild pitch.
Each team knocked in a run in the fourth and the game remained tied until Fairmont's Zach Musgrove sent a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the eighth.
The Mounties went scoreless in the bottom half and Fairmont sealed the victory. Junior
Jake Manke (0-2) was handed the loss for the Mounties and Stegmaier earned his second victory of the day after tossing three scoreless innings.
Senior
Bryce Zaparzynski allowed three earned runs in four-complete innings and freshman
Lorenzo Febbo did not allow a run in 2 and 2/3.
Kulina was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and sophomore
Jake Haas tallied two singles.
The Mounties are back in action on Monday, March 2 at 10:30 p.m. at the Sue Morris Complex when they take on the host Glenville State College in non-conference action.
