MANSFIELD – Following their two wins yesterday, the Lock Haven University baseball team completed the sweep of Mansfield University on Sunday afternoon at Shaute Field.
Â
The Mountaineers scored the first run of Sunday in the bottom of the opening frame.
Brittain Shander led the inning off with a single to right field. Starting pitcher
Tyler Guidos helped his own cause by bringing Shander all the way around to score on a double to left field.
Â
Lock Haven responded in the top of the following stanza to take the lead thanks to a three-run shot off the bat of Demetrius Haskins.
Â
Following that in the bottom of the second inning,
Jake Haas dropped a fair ball down the left field line and legged a triple out of it. The hit scored
Dom Lopez to bring the Mounties back within a run.
Â
Again, the Bald Eagles produced in response to Mansfield. Joe Zgleszewski and Reagan Lawlor each drove in a run during the third inning. Lawlor also produced a single in the fifth to score Max Joseph and make it 6-2 LHU.
Â
The Mountaineers rallied in the fifth inning after an error on the shortstop extended their time at the plate.
Camren Ney worked a walk with the bases loaded to force in
Josh Kulina. Lopez singled on the very next pitch to score both Mengel and Senior and make it a one-run ballgame again.
Â
The Bald Eagles were able to tack on another run in the sixth on a double by Liam McArthur, and pitcher Dillon Good was able to close the door in relief and earn his second save of the season.
Â
McArthur and Zgleszewski both had three-hit games and drove in a run apiece.
Â
Mansfield scored five runs on six hits. Six different players collected hits, and each run was scored by different players as well.
Â
Tyler Guidos threw five innings in his fifth start of the season. The junior from Quakertown, Pa. struck out eight Bald Eagles in the loss. In two innings in relief,
Hunter DePrimo struck out another five LHU batters.
Â
GAME 2
The Mountaineers again jumped on the board first in the second game of the afternoon.Â
Eric Senior collected his team-leading 13
th RBI on a single in the first inning.
Â
MU got just three hits in the game, but walked six times. Senior's RBI in the first would prove to be the only offensive production in the runs column the Mounties would see as the Bald Eagles shut them down in the remaining six innings. Avery Eddy (W, 2-2) and Colby Hiddemen (S, 1) split the workload from the mound for LHU.
Â
Max Joseph finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Two of his RBI's came in the seventh inning on a double that helped seal the win for Lock Haven.
Â
Entering the series with a .400 batting average and ranking seventh in the conference, Liam McArthur added eight hits (8-for-13) in the series. The senior bolstered his average to .432, which now puts him at fourth.
Â
Camren Ney and
Koty Fitzgerald provided the other two Mountie hits; both players also drew walks.
Brittain Shander walked twice and scored the lone run.
Â
Bryce Zaparzynski (L, 1-2) worked 6.2 innings, and struck out five batters.
Jake Manke threw a third of an inning in relief.
Mansfield next travels to Slippery Rock on Tuesday and then hosts Millersville for the first two games of that conference series on Friday, April 12th at Shaute Field.Â
