Mounties Unlucky at Goldey-Beacom

WILIMINGTON, Del. – Alli McGovern and Joelle Snyder each had four hits on the day, but errors proved to be costly for the Mounties who dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom on Sunday.

Goldey-Beacom (2-6, 0-0 CACC) scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 7-6 before winning game two 9-1 in six innings.

In game one, the Lightning strung together three hits to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

The Mounties put runners aboard in each of the first two innings before pushing the equalizing runs across in the top of the third. O'Donnell led-off the inning with a double before a McGovern single put runners on the corners. A foul out allowed McGovern to advance to second for Lesley Fritz to drive in both runs with a single.

Snyder opened the fifth inning with a triple then McGovern put Mansfield (6-4, 0-0 PSAC Central) ahead 3-2 with an RBI single up the middle. The lead would not last long as the Lightning scored four runs, including three unearned, in the bottom of the frame after benefitting from a pair of MU errors.

Trailing 6-3, Snyder led-off the seventh with her second double of the day and McGovern drew a walk to put two aboard. Fritz later drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Devin Jones cleared the bases with a clutch two-out double to centerfield to tie the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the inning, Goldey-Beacom got a runner on with Braydee Whitman's one-out single. Jess Lusk followed with a single into the outfield and an ensuing error allowed Whitman to come home and score the winning run for the Lightning.

Taylor Brees earned the complete game victory in the circle, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Alexis Easling took the loss in 6.1 innings of work with just three of the seven runs scored being earned.

Mansfield totaled four errors in the game.

Goldey-Beacom struck first again in game two with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mansfield evened the score in the third inning when Jones drove in Snyder with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Lightning scored the go-ahead run in the fifth before tacking on seven in the sixth to end the game.

Kaisey Reed went 6.0 innings with five hits and no earned runs allowed to earn the victory. Arianna Young took the loss with three strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed in 5.1 innings. Connor Decker entered the game in the sixth and did not allow an earned run.

Mansfield totaled six errors in game two.

The Mountaineers travel to Millersville on Saturday for PSAC crossover play.
